Heading to the Hamptons? All the Latest News You Need to Know
It's Hamptons season again! Whether you're grabbing Shake Shack before your long slog on the Jitney, or booking a luxurious trip via Blade, read below for our round-up of all the latest happenings to know before you head out East for the summer.
New spots to eat (or at least, be seen): This seems to be the summer of reboots, as many of the owners of some of the Hamptons' favorite haunts are opening second locations. Right next door to La Fondita, Coche Comedor is a new Mexican hotspot serving ceviche and grilled meats in Amagansett from the team behind Nick & Tony's, Rowdy Hall and Townline BBQ; Sam Talbot of Surf Club is opening a new spot called Morty’s Oyster Stand where Cyril's Fish Stand used to be in East Hampton. New York City favorites are opening up in the Hamptons as well; Paola's, the elegant Upper East Side Italian joint, will be opening a new location in East Hampton in place of EMP Summer House. And the hip omakase restaurant Shuko will be opening a pop-up at the Highway Restaurant & Bar.
Shows to check out: For those who don't leave all sense of cultural appreciation behind in the city (or just don't know what else to do with themselves on a rainy day), the performance spaces in the Hamptons have a fantastic line-up this year; Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor will be premiering "The Prompter," a comedy about a veteran actress who forgets her lines and the young actor hired to help her; Alec Baldwin will join a discussion about his new film"Framing John DeLorean" at Guild Hall; and for the kids, the Children's Museum of the East End will be hosting a Chess Fest tournament on June 22nd.
Big Deals: Among the more high-profile listings on the market now is fashion designer Helmut Lang's home in East Hampton for $100 million.
Helicopters are still a nuisance: Neighbors on the East End continue to wage their (now-decade-long) war against helicopters flying Manhattanites in and out of the beach each weekend. “It drives people who live here crazy. It’s a barrage of helicopter noise,”Robert Ghosio, the Southold Town Councilman told the New York Post. Maybe pick up some ear plugs before heading out?
Two Billboards Spark Fury: While the drama here may not ever result in an Oscar-winning film, billboards are causing some ruckus on the East End as the town of Southampton continues to fight against the Shinnecock Native American tribe's efforts to erect two enormous, 61-foot-high billboards along Route 27. Town officials object not only to the size of the billboards, but also the brightness of the video screens they will feature, believing they "exemplify the very degradation such overdeveloped, urban-styled features have on the bucolic landscape."
