Staff Spotlight: Alex Botero, 500 Lake Shore Drive

500 Lake Shore Drive’s Chief Engineer, Alex, fills us in on a typical day on the job and family life in Streeterville.

Can you describe your role at 500 Lake Shore Drive?
Alex:
I am the Chief Engineer and my role is to guide a team in maintaining all aspects of our building. Cleanliness is important, but I also need to maintain the mechanical systems of the building to insure that every resident is comfortable and safe.

How long have you lived and worked with Related?
Alex:
On October 26, I will have completed one FABULOUS year working with Related!

What sets a Related Rental property apart from other buildings?
Alex:
What sets us apart is how we truly make the residents feel welcome and special at the building. Our motto 'Expect more at home' is something that our staff really takes to heart and tries to demonstrate during every interaction with our residents.

What’s a typical day on the job like?
Alex:
A typical day for me consist of inspecting all of the major mechanical equipment, assigning duties to the maintenance staff, and scheduling or meeting with contractors.

Any fall activities you’re looking forward to in Chicago?
Alex:
Like most Chicagoans the only thing that I am looking forward to this fall is the Cubs in the playoffs.

What sets Streeterville apart from other Chicago neighborhoods?
Alex:
Streeterville has great restaurants, night life, schools and parks. It feels like a quiet neighborhood while being within walking distance of the Magnificent Mile, Oak Street Beach and Navy Pier.

Do you have a favorite amenity?
Alex:
Our family loves the swimming pool. My son loves to challenge me to races across the pool.

What are some family-friendly favorites within the neighborhood?
Alex:
My son and I love to go to the beach, while my wife can be found enjoying the shopping on Michigan Avenue.

How has being a parent changed the way you live and work in Chicago?
Alex:
When I became a parent, I realized how important it was to have access to good schools and outdoor spaces.

If you were to move somewhere else within the Related portfolio, where would you move and why?
Alex:
I love living in Chicago and have never given serious thought to leaving, but during the cold winter months, I sometimes daydream about living in California.

When I’m not at 500 LSD, you can find me…
Alex:
teaching Plumbing or Locksmithing class at the SEIU Local 1 Training Center.

We’ve heard you’re a big fisherman… does your son join you?
Alex:
Sometimes. Now that he's getting older, he enjoys spending time fishing with me.

Where should we go for the best fishing in Illinois?
Alex:
Shabbona Lake near DeKalb is my favorite in Illinois, but I also love going to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota.
